The best language learning apps and other stuff I wrote lately

A week ago Wirecutter published my recommendations for the best language learning apps. It took ages to test all the applications and then to write the article. I have a lot of respect for the writers and editors there now and it’s an honour to have a byline on the site.

I’ve been thinking lately about how we can take care of our brains during these extremely stupid times—here’s a couple articles about that.

  • How to read more and scroll less Lifehacker.  Seeing hundreds of memes about the latest dumb thing that one billionaire said doesn’t help me reach any of my goals. Taking the time to get context on the issues I care about—and thinking deeply about them—might.
  • How to quit social media for good PopSci. Part of living on the modern internet is realizing that a social network just isn’t useful or fun anymore.
  • Swear at Google Until It Hides AI Search Results Lifehacker Saying ‘fuck’ every now and then can means people who don’t like profanity won’t engage with you. This trick, apparently, also works with bots: swear liberally and they won’t interact with you. Welcome to the fucking future.

I’m going to post roundups of my own articles here regularly—let me know if you enjoy that or if you’d rather I just stick to essays. Thanks!
